Description

This is an executable for patching the dark corners of the earth executable, script and shader files.
Only the original retail executable can be patched for most of the changes due to the Steam and D2D executables being protected (edit: the GOG release has the xml at the same location so also works).
There are two ways to get around the blue light bug now that work on all versions of the game:
  • The original work around that changes the game scripts so you don't have to shoot the sorcerers.
  • The new shader fix so that you can complete the scene as expected.
[Just as a note I sought permission from both Guzz and GOG and they both were happy for their fixes to be included here.]

New in 1.7 is:
The limit to 60 FPS as fixed by GOG which fixes most of the problems with script timings which people see when their FPS is higher than this.
You can now apply this to the original retail version also (it's out there but you'll need to find it yourself).

New in 1.6 are:
Detect the GOG executable.
Fix the blue light shader using the fix provided by Guzz.
Fix the sky dome shader using the fix provided by Guzz.

New in 1.5 are:
Options to unlock all difficulty levels and all cinematics after you next start a new game.
Give all weapons at the start of every level.
Double the amount of time given for each stage of the escape sequence.

    1. Hi, is there any chance you can re-enable gamepad controls via scripts (maybe need to check scripts from Xbox version to see what was removed) and add missing xinput support same way Ginput did for GTA 3- SA ? This game really feels better with analogue movement as it was on console.

  5. Got this game recently, and was greatly enjoying it until the truck chase, and then greatly enjoying it between the truck chase and the 'shoot the lights' sequence on the destroyer. (I did not enjoy the truck chase.)

I thought I was basically doomed, but actually found your patch on the TVTropes page for the game, and thanks to that, I managed to finished it. Therefore, I thought it might be worth it to drop in and say, Thank you so very much for this patch. You managed to save a very cool game for me.

  6. hi, i have this error when i try to save changes. it reads something like this: "Access denied to access route" followed by the route of the "CoCMainWin32.exe"
by the way, i'm mostly using the patcher as a solution for the running thing, i can only walk... maybe there is another solution! please! i'll apreciate some help!

  7. I know this is old but I wanted to say thanks. I had a glitch that caused the game to crash whenever I went into the vent to get to the Captain's quarters. Using this I was able to replay the deck battle without being able to see the blue lights and then when I got back to the vent, my game didn't crash.

  9. Hello,

thanks for the awesome patch. You can remove the cutscene overlays, but you can't remove the sneak mode overlay sadly. This is so distracting and immersion breaking. Any chance for a fix?

Would a widescreen fix be possible? A widescreen resolution merely stretches the 4:3 ratio.

    ReplyDelete
  10. This doesn't work properly unfortunately.

FOV resets in the next mission, or if I change is messed up, unless I use FOV 80.0 and sneak FOV 90.0.
I give the walk the running speed values and the run walking speed values (so I walk by default and have not this ugly sneak overlay, but nothing of it works.

That sneak overlay is a real headache.

  17. Many thanks for this! I shelved this game years ago after running into the ship's gun and invisible chanters bug, this patch allowed me to finally finish. I also ran into another bug at the ending escape sequence and this patch didn't help, although setting the cpu affinity to a single core for the game allowed me to finish. Thanks again for the patch!

  27. Too bad, the patch does not recognize the exe's size as proper for the digital download version (legally bought along with the unique activation code)... I understand this is due to the lack of cd-protection in such a digital release, therefore the modified exe length. The patch won't install in such a case.

    1. The only difference in the various distributions is the main exe so if you replace it with the original one you are good to go. You shouldn't find it hard to find on the web. I've stayed away from providing it to avoid potential legal issues.

  28. Disable film grain/letterbox doesn't affect healing scenes.
I'd greatly appreciate a setting that completely removes film grain from the game, the effect is clearly visible in darker scenes and seems to be a pattern making it more obnoxious. Do you know if film grain can be disabled?

  30. I must say, doubling the time in the hotel escape part would ruin the urgency and sence of terror that section originaly presents.
I mean first time i played it on xbox classic this escape section cemented itself as one of the best horror game experiences of my life and it still is.
Have´nt played evil within yet though but i believe that after i do, call of chtulhu will still be in my top 5 best horror games ever. :)

    1. The Steam exe is protected so most of the mods won't work. You can find the retail or GOG exe if you do a decent google.

  38. Hi. Noticed you're still responding here.
I've just spent a day trying to tweak the film grain. Problem is, I have no idea what I'm doing, just a monkey pushing keys at random. So far: I've confirmed my suspicion that it's a tiny (16x64) generated noise tile that doesn't scale with resolution. I've tracked its drawing down to ScreenQuadScaled_t2.vso. I've decompiled and recompiled it. I've managed to rescale the noise in the shader. Unfortunately, it's drawn with no filtering, so that's not a satisfactory result.
I then tried to break the shader so it would just draw the blended result somewhere off-screen, this works for just walking around and taking screenshots, but fails once a bunch of effects get layered together.
So uh, would you say it makes sense to dig further? I'd really be happy with any result: turn it off altogether, generate a better tile, point it to external textures, blur it somehow (just filtering would cause seams probably). Does any of this sound feasible without deep-diving? Does what I'm saying even make sense?

    1. Hi, if you have the original retail release exe then you can turn off the filmgrain using the patcher. I don't want to directly link to it from here but you can easily download the original retail exe if you google for: Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth retail executable. Hope that helps.

    2. I do have the retail exe. Unless there's a more recent version of the patch than 1.7, that tweak only turns off additional overlays (even says "in cutscenes"), the basic noise filter is unaffected.

I noticed you creadit one xbill for the tweak, but search results only point to a scraper site. I've tried to look for the original thread on bethesda.net and on nexus, but was unsuccessful.

      Delete
    3. OK I'm guessing this must be turned on by a call in the game scripts. I can take a look through the scripts source and see if there is an easy way to disable it. Which part of the game is that screenshot from?

      Delete
  39. It's there regardless of a specific part. E.g. the noise is tiled a hundred times across the cop's unform in your own screenshots.
My screenshot (supposed to be animated btw) was just me loading to Esoteric Order pt2 from the debug menu. A more obvious place to test this is against the misty void near the start of Air-filled Tunnels pt2 (loading from the same menu).

    1. So I guess what you need to do is overwrite the .vso file with a vertex shader that just passes through without changing anything. I've not done a huge amount of shader decompiling so what tool are you using to decompile/recompile?

      Delete
    2. 3D Ripper to decompile, vsa from DX SDK'08 to compile. The files in question.
Seems like it only handles coordinates, the actual mixing to get the pixel values must be happening elsewhere, and so is the noise generation.
Like I said though, I'm also mostly poking blindly at this.
